Illuminati

No final do século 18, Adam Weishaupt era professor na Universidade de Ingolstadt na Baviera. Ele acreditava na abolição do governo e da religião organizada de tal modo que, em 1 de Maio de 1776, fundou um pequeno clube de sócios com esse objectivo. O grupo inicial começou com cinco membros e chamava-se A Ordem dos Perfectibilists. Mais tarde mudou de nome para a Ordem dos Illuminati e espalhou-se por toda a Europa central.

Desde o início, a primeira regra dos Illuminati era “NÃO FALES SOBRE OS ILLUMINATI”. Devido aos seus fins controversos, o clube tinha de manter a sua agenda, e até a sua existência, estritamente secretas. Na correspondencia escrita, os membros usavam códigos para designer datas, locais e os próprios membros. O nome de código de Weishaupt's era "Spartacus."

O professor Weishaupt juntou-se a um ramo Alemão da Freemasonry em 1777, sendo iniciado em Munique. Imediatamente começou a recrutar entre os seus companheiros Masons, membros para o seu grupo clandestino. Este recrutamento continuou incansável até ele finalmente ser apanhado e expulso dos Freemasons.

Finalmente alguém espalhou a notícia sobre os projectos e os ideais aos quais Weishaupt se dedicava. De repente, ele transformou-se num dos homens mais odiados da Europa. Tinha conseguido enraivecer simultaneamente a igreja e o estado.

O resultado final foi um ataque cerrado a todas as sociedades secretas. Em Junho de 1784, quer os Masons quer os Illuminati foram declarados ilegais pelo Rei da Baviera. Weishaupt fugiu para Gotha, uma cidade na Alemanha oriental, para escapar a ser preso. Aí viveu o resto dos seus dias.

According to the official explanation, the phrase is Latin for "a new order of the ages." The designer of the Great Seal, Charles Thomson, claimed that the "new order" he was referring to was that of the American republic. The year on the pyramid is 1776, which is the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

All right, fine. But what about that eyeball? That thing is definitely occult. Nothing says "Big Brother" quite like a hovering eyeball.

Thomson explained away that one by claiming the eyeball belonged to God (or "Providence," as he put it), and that the phrase ANNUIT COEPTIS means "it has favored our undertakings." Taken together, they are intended to communicate the idea that God is rooting for America.
