Definitions from Technical Dictionary:

Entrapment -

the opposite of freedom. A person who is not free is entrapped. He may be trapped by an idea; he may be trapped by matter; he may be trapped by energy or space or time; or he may be trapped by all of them. The more thoroughly a person is trapped, the less free he is. He cannot move, he cannot change, he cannot communicate, he cannot feel affinity and reality.

Freedom –

ability to create and position energy or matter in time and space.

Self-Determinism –

1. the ability to locate in space and time, energy and matter; also the ability to create space and time in which to create and locate energy and matter.

2. self determinism in the field of motion consists of, by own power of choice, permitting the object or body to be still or not to be still; permitting a thing to be changed or not to be changed; permitting a thing to be started or not to be started.

3. self-determinism is that state of being wherein the individual can or cannot be controlled by his environment according to his own choice.

Responsibility –

1. the ability and willingness to assume the status of full source and cause for all efforts and counter-efforts on all dynamics.

2. when one speaks of responsibility he means “the determination of the cause which produced the effect.”

3. full responsibility is not fault; it is recognition of being cause.

7. admission of control of space, energy and objects.

 

Entrapment

“Now, you take preclear after preclear after preclear after preclear. You put them on E-Meters, you try to run them, you try to do this, you try to do that, straight on through, and you'll find in each and every case you're finding the phenomenon of entities, bodies in pawn, communications, spaceships, other planets, locations, beingness in other states and all of this; and you'll find this to be a consistent condition. You have fulfilled this definition of the MEST universe. It's evidently agreed upon. And it's agreed upon because - it's actually true. You couldn't go out and get somebody off the street and put an E-Meter in their hands and start asking them questions on this without getting the same response as you'd get from your classmates on it. They would know nothing about this.”

“The space stations exist out here in the solar system. They use the asteroids. It's a very peculiar system. This solar system has a planet which is broken up, the asteroid belt. It gives a low-gravity platform for takeoff and so on, and that broken planet is of considerable interest as a space station, that is to say a galactic jump.

Now, there aren't any planets up at this end of the galaxy which form a good galactic entering spot for incoming transport and other ships. But this beautiful, broken-up planet here with a light-gravity sun and so on, makes a very ideal spot.

And as a result, this area of the solar system got into prominence. It got into a little bit of prominence, and it's slightly a bone of contention.”

“But completely aside from that fact, Earth has been used consistently as a prison; and it is a prison, and it is heavily screened. There are installations in Mongolia, there are installations in the Pyrenees here on Earth, and there are installations down in the Mountains of the Moon in Africa which pick up, very often, people on death.”

“If you want to know something about cold blooded brutality and why people here on Earth are so completely, horribly fixated on "let's be kind," and "let's get it organized one way or the other," it is the utter, brutal disregard for beingness which you find throughout the systems. What you have here and consider humanitarian and so forth is a very interestingly built-up system. There's a cast system which is exercised in other parts of the solar system which would appall the most viciously minded duke who ever lived here on Earth. There's slavery, and what men are put to in that slavery, how men are treated and so forth.”

 

LRH lecture 15 April 1952 HCL-23 Theta Bodies

“So I'm not quite sure who wanted us to have this body. That's a lie; I am EXACTLY sure at this point, but I'm not going to tell you right now. (laughter)”

“Now the advantage, then, the second that one was given a body - it was out of the great misunderstanding on the part of a lot of people who had a terrific thirst for control - this great misunderstanding was that the second that you began to make somebody aberrated you began to make somebody dangerous. Because people who are way up the Tone Scale aren't dangerous. They'll go around and they'll operate in order to - well, they'll try to keep interested and they'll have some fun with things. As a matter of fact, way up the Tone Scale you’ll start running into aesthetics, very heavily - very, very heavily - and you start taking a very great interest in aesthetics and construction and so forth.

Well, therefore, you bring a person down from that and degrade him, and you make him dangerous. Do you know that there is not a criminal anywhere in any prison who isn't - not a criminal because he was degraded and lost his personal pride? I have done a very thorough cross-check of this - what they call "bad women," "criminal men." Their badness and criminality is immediately traceable to a loss of their powers and personal pride. And after that they were bad, they were dangerous. If you want to rehabilitate a criminal, just go back and find out when he did lose his personal pride. Rehabilitate that one point and you don't have a criminal anymore.

But the people who set this up did not have any understanding of the mechanics of thought. You see, they could, they could observe, empirically, how souls operated, how theta bodies operated, how MEST bodies operated, and so on. And they could examine this phenomenon and they knew what they could do because they could see it, and so they started to do it. And right after that, they couldn't undo anything they did, because they didn't have the mechanics. So they couldn't undo what they'd done, so you just had to keep doing more and more and more and more control, until at last it was all 100 percent control. And the human race, as we see it now, had come down to the point of being the human race as we see it now.”

“Well, why is this? It's because the theta body, the theta beingness of the person, is a continuous thing which goes on from life to life to life to life, and it enters made bodies or makes bodies and continues on to the death of the body, and so on. And what's wrong with this beingness, and why, as you sit there, don't you realize and know completely where you've been and what you've done and so on? Well, people wanted you to have a body, and they wanted you to do this and they wanted you to do that, and there are very specific, routine blank-outs on this track - on the life track - whereby they take the theta body and they do certain things to it and they say certain things to it and they give it compulsions, and it eventually winds up by forgetting each life as it lives it.

But, with processing, you can turn around and blow those lives wide open. I'm getting interesting data on lives having been blown open. A person suddenly comes into possession of languages, personal techniques and so on. One woman was reported to me recently having had a sequence run out and suddenly came into possession of all the techniques of a pioneer woman. She was a girl who had been raised in the city, had never been interested in this particularly, and all of a sudden she could make soap and she can do this and she can do that and she's very interested in this whole thing. A life back in the early eighteenth century had suddenly blown open with all of its data.

People have been shut off, in other words, from life to life. And their awareness has been cut way down - not by experience but by the terrific desire on the part of other beings elsewhere to do a control, to do a thorough control. So that you get - in insane asylums and so forth - you get paranoids rushing up and down, saying, "Somebody is after me, they're controlling me. They want to do this to me, they want to do that to me," and so on. You see this all the time. Of course, the thing to do is "to go give them electric shock." That is a method of control - an electric shock.

But the point is that he, this man who is mad actually probably has very, very adequate reasons to be mad! He's had things happen to him. If a preclear is suddenly sailed into some of this material without any warning at all, you would think he's mad because this doesn't compare with the history of the human race as written by Beard or Darwin or somebody. It doesn't compare."

 

LRH lecture 16 April 1952 HCL-21 Anatomy of the Theta Body

“Tonight I want to talk to you about theta bodies, the anatomy of a theta body itself, and the anatomy of the composite which you are calling you. And you might find this of considerable interest.

This is a matter of research which is quite old. People have been working in this field on Earth here, that I know about, for the last ten thousand years, and they've been working elsewhere on this field for many more years than that. And the data which has been amassed has more or less, up to this time, been one-sided.

Nobody went backwards on this data. That is to say, they knew how to do things to theta bodies and they knew how theta bodies would behave when you did things to them, but they did not know what to do to a theta body to undo what was done to it - in other words, a reverse process.

Now, by getting some thought, emotion, effort, the recordings, facsimiles, and now the anatomy itself of the theta body, it is possible for us to turn around and reverse vector on this whole problem. We can now take apart what has been done to theta bodies, we can examine what theta bodies are, natively, and what are their - at least the greater part of -their total potentials.

It becomes obvious that nothing that has been done to a theta body in the last trillion years - if you will pardon my statement (I am merely following an electropsychometer's reading, preclear after preclear’s) - trillion or trillions of years is about the age of the theta body, MEST universe time.

It is discoverable now that the theta body at one time had possessed enormous potentials and did not need very much of what we call experience, and that these potentials were seen and recognized, but the potentialities of the theta body were such that at no time could anyone thoroughly control them. And today, theta bodies can turn around and move out of this control sector. So, the whole effort of the last umpteen, lord-knows-how-long years, has been a bust. In other words, the efforts of controlling, localizing, centralizing, compounding, impacting, upsetting, turning around, using theta bodies has been fruitless.

Nobody knew how to turn these things around until he knew something about thought, emotion, effort. Now all of a sudden we take apart the composite theta body - which is you - into its component theta bodies, and we take these apart as regard to the experience, and we find the potentiality of which a central theta line is capable. And this is not slight; this is tremendous.

We're back at the potentiality as it was, plus the knowledge of how to take it apart if it gets any other way than how it was. So we've made a little bit out of this, if anything. Now, if anybody becomes uncomfortable while I'm talking here, be assured it is probably a temporary condition. Very few of these composite bodies are very well stuck together. They are not well glued, in other words, and at the first signals of awareness, things start to happen. Actually, at this time, and with the subject matter which I’m giving you tonight, you won’t probably experience much more than a mild somatic or a hot somatic or feel an empty space or something of the sort. But what we’re dealing with is very root stuff. Up to this time we’ve been dealing with facsimiles; now we are dealing with the theta body and partly with facsimiles.

But if you can introduce the awareness of each part of the composite which is you, you get total awareness and you also lose a lot of parts. This is not bad.”

Force as Homo Sapiens and as a Thetan, Responsibility

“Communication, as you know, is handling energy. Perception is handling energy. And when a person is unwilling to handle energy, he is unwilling to perceive.”

“Well, an auditor, when he's very experienced, actually doesn't like to draw too many conclusions, actually, about the emotional or sanity state of his preclear, for this reason: The preclear may be reading a relay circuit of a relay circuit of a relay circuit of a relay circuit. And the preclear might really be a spittoon reading a human being, you see? You have to get well into the case, really, to find out what the preclear really is that is doing what with what.”

“And if you notice, as you work on preclears, you're primarily interested in solving the problem of communication. That's the problem you're trying to solve continually: the problem of communication. It should tell you a great deal.

And so, if you're handling the problem of communication, you had certainly better be handling the problem of energy. And if you're handling the problem of energy, you certainly had better know what force is, what energy is and the basic definition of what self-determinism is. Self-determinism is locate matter and energy in space and time, or originate or create space and time in which to locate what one creates for matter and energy. It's very simple, the definition.”

“Is there anything else we have to know, beyond those two points to solve a case?

Well, really not, because you'd fall into this other one, one way or the other.

But in view of the fact that most auditors have a tendency themselves to somewhat shy away from some of the crueler facts of life, we had better remark on this.”

“Well, this added thing is responsibility. You possibly think that responsibility has somewhat gotten lost in the shuffle and that we have no more concern with responsibility just because we're talking about force. No, indeed.

Matter of fact, we have just started on responsibility when we talk about handling force, because you could define responsibility as the willingness to respond -- willingness to respond on any subject. Let's give it a little more factual definition and which is usable, that you could do something with. Let's say that responsibility is "command over force" -- let's just define it that way, crudely. Responsibility is "command over force." Therefore, willingness to be responsible would be willingness to take command of force -- to work with the dichotomy "the idea -- the force." That would be responsibility.”

“We find out that people will take responsibility according to that position on the Tone Scale. And a person will shirk responsibility in whatever quarter he cannot or will not handle force. That makes it very simple, doesn't it? Responsibility, then, becomes something which is very simple and very useful to you.”

“Now, force is not the same as violent force. Any energy flow would -- if directed -- would be a force. The cult of force is 1.5: let's-all-destroy-it cult, as such. But a fellow so withdraws from the savage and wild use of energy that he won't even use a vaguely proper estimation of force. He won't use any kind of force really; he'll just back off from force.

It never occurs to him... When you say force, when you say forte main, when you say all sorts of words with regard to that, 90 percent of the people who hear the word say immediately, "Oh, that's bad. I don't like force." What are they saying it with? They're saying that with force. Force is estimated, directed, channeled energy. Now that's the definition of force.”

“Now, continuing on this responsibility, if you have then achieved with your preclear full command over force, you have only then achieved full responsibility. So what is full responsibility? It would be full command over force, not full employment of force; that's something else. Full employment of force would be an abandonment of every ethic, because an ethic is essentially a proper estimation of force. You could say a culture, a society, depends for its rationality -- and so does every individual -- on a proper estimation of force.

Therefore, behind force you have, much more powerfully, that which estimates force, and that is reason in the mest universe.”

“Well, you'll find something wrong with the communication line in any area where a person will not handle force. This tells you immediately that the first thing you'd find wrong with a thetan would be communications.

That's what you'd perceive to be wrong with him. But what's actually wrong with him is he won't handle force, and so he will automatically cut communications with any area that he is either (1) choosing for his own randomity or (2) that has been painful in the past.

Two ways to rehabilitate that. They're very simple ways. One is, by education and a gradient scale of connection, reconnect the line; and the other is to run out the incident or postulate either by flows or Rising Scale, which created his idea about this thing.”

“Theta traps are trapped ordinarily with aesthetics. The other type of trap is a mechanical trap which has a matching wavelength in its construction. It's a post or something, and the thetan throws a beam - he's just passing through the area and all of a sudden something echos at his wavelength. And the next thing you know, he thinks somebody he knows is over there and he goes over to look. And then the second he tries to get off of it, the more energy he puts out, the more active the trap becomes. There's no energy in the trap but the energy the thetan himself is putting into it. And he'll stay on these things for God knows how long. Those are types of traps.

As far as a thetan being very badly implanted is concerned, how can you implant an energy unit! That's an interesting question: How can you implant an energy unit! It's a question in which you should be awfully interested. Because you can't! You can give it some ridges, but it can always move out from amongst these ridges.

You have to get it to agree and change its mind about something. And once it's agreed on something of the sort, why then it's possible for it to be in a state which keeps on holding on to ridges.”

 

LRH tape lecture 7 March 1952 Facsimiles: How To Handle Recordings

“…there’s a lot of mystery which has been put up around in the mind because mystery pays off. Give me a good mystery – a good mystery – anytime, and I can show you a conquest of Earth. One good mystery. No trouble at all. I mean that as fact. It’s based solidly upon the past.

Every great enslavement or every great release of man on Earth has pursued from a hidden datum – a new phenomenon which nobody knew very much about except a select small group, who then held it to their bosoms and so holding it were able to use it to instill compulsion obedience upon the rest of man.”

“Because the mind seeks to fix on things, so when it is confronted with an unknown it seeks to fix on some known factor in the unknown. And if the mind can’t fix on some factors it will go into fear, and so can be influenced. Mystery!”

“Therefore, the mind of man and all of its phenomena has long been used for the control of man. Man has been enslaved by the fact that others did not know enough about their own minds to prevent the phenomena of their own minds from being used against them.

This is the history of the race. Somebody learned something about the mind. He promptly makes a secret out of it, a mystery out of it, and used it against minds. That’s what’s very peculiar about Scientology and the work on which I’ve been engaged in the last twenty-two years. It’s been in an effort to expose all phenomena of the mind so you couldn’t do it anymore.”
